competere /kom'pɛtere/ v. intr. [dal lat. competĕre, der. di petĕre "dirigersi, andare", col pref. con-, propr. "andare, chiedere insieme"] (io compèto, ecc.; manca il part. pass. e perciò anche i tempi comp.).
1. [essere in gara con altri, con la prep. con dei contendenti e la prep. per della posta contesa: c. (con altri ) per un premio ] ▶◀ cimentarsi, concorrere, contendere, gareggiare. ‖ misurarsi.

a. [essere dovuto o rientrare nelle competenze, con la prep. a della persona: è un titolo che non gli compete ] ▶◀ appartenere, concernere (∅), riguardare (∅), spettare, toccare.
b. (amministr.) [rientrare nella giurisdizione di un ufficio giudiziario, o nelle attribuzioni di organi pubblici e sim., con la prep. a : è un processo che compete alla Corte d'assise ] ▶◀ spettare, Ⓖ toccare.
c. [rientrare nella sfera di una disciplina o sim., con la prep. a ] ▶◀ concernere (∅), inerire (∅), spettare.
